Starting out in any career can be daunting. This is especially true for real estate agents because you're dealing with very "big" things - homes, property, and of course money. Young and new agents might be overlooked, but actually, it pays to stick with someone who is fresh and young because they're on the pulse. Agents who know what's going on and are quick to pivot is where the industry is headed. So, today we are joined by Rachel Garcia, a successful young agent in the NYC area and she is sharing with us her thoughts for new agents.
Rachel's Advice 101
Agent Rachel Garcia listed out her tips for our readers here:
1.) Go to the office as much as possible and meet as many people in your company as possible. Especially if you are at a large company, there’s going to be so many agents who will need help with showings or help with emails.
Elite Informer wants to add here that it's so important to get out and about as agent. Networking is where it's at. Co-listings, random coffee shops, referrals - you name it - it can help build your sphere of influence. Not to mention that when it comes to mental health and office culture, face-to-face is always better.
2.) Join a team. As much as our job description is an ‘ independent contractor’ it really is all about building a team. With agents, mentors, lawyers, inspectors etc.
We'll be expanding on this more in later pieces but building a team is so much more than other agents. Escrow, lawyers, banks, etc. - you want an all star team so that everything is seamless.
3.) Don’t forget to let the people already in your circle know you’ve joined a real estate company. Posting to your social media can be helpful with building a client base without having to do too much.
We talk about social media and networking a lot here. That's because it really is so important for agents to market themselves. So, don't sleep on your inner circle!
More on Teams
Rachel expands on joining a real estate team and why it's effective here:
"So joining a team looks like finding someone in the company who would be willing to mentor you and add you to their already existing group. A mentor is already established and has their trusted lawyers, appraisers, lenders etc. that they already work with closely. As you start doing more deals and growing your business you can always reach out and find different lenders or lawyers that you might like better. It's always good to start with people who you know have a reputable brand backing them.
Within the group you might see a hierarchy like this; a mentor is probably a well established agent looking for help. They will probably have a large client base and will delegate clients to several agents. Starting out, your role within this group might look like being available for showing clients property. Then as you become more comfortable/knowledgeable you can start qualifying new leads, answering questions and setting up showings yourself. Some new agents might try and start doing everything on their own but I've found it to be much more helpful to be apart of a team you can go to for advice and who are there to basically help you succeed."
This is a great tip for new agents thinking about going solo or joining a team. Look forward to hearing more from Rachel Garcia as we dive deeper into the lives of young, successful agents! Continuing to network and learn from those around you is the best way to gain success as an agent.
