Do you work within an office with other real estate professionals? Are you thinking about opening up your own brokerage? Either way, if you work alongside others and not just from home - cultivating a strong office culture is more important than ever. Since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Americans are coming out of the most isolated times in many's lives. Due to this, working in a place with a calm and positive culture is highly sought after when it comes to choosing a workplace.
What A Strong Culture Looks Like
A strong work culture means that the community within an office is functioning at a high level. People feel welcome, secure to communicate, and for the most part - enjoy being within their office space. Now, work is work, and not everyone is going to love being at work all of the time. But it shouldn't be the people or the culture creating the bad taste in employee's mouths.
People typically greet one another, know basic details about their coworkers lives, and pitch in to help when needed. In a real estate office or a shared office space (like a co-work, etc.) a strong office culture can look like people at ease, working diligently, and enjoying the camaraderie of getting things done.
Strategies to Strengthen
If the office culture where you work is shifting towards the negative or feels "stuffy" then there are some strategies to brighten it up.
Try some of these next time you go into work:
- Make eye contact and say hello to those you come across
- Hold the door for someone
- Ask how someone's doing and say something other than "good" when they ask you
- Ask people questions about themselves (without being too nosy)
- Ask people what they did that weekend or if they have any plans for the upcoming weekend
- Say goodbye as you leave
- Take a quick snack or lunch break with other colleagues
- Go on a quick walk outside to get some sunlight and invite others
As more and more jobs are functioning remotely, and real estate largely always has, it's important to still maintain and cultivate connection.
