Staying safe is important, all day every day. But, no one wants to talk about safety. It's depressing, and a little scary. However, it's necessary. Here are safety precautions every agent should take.
Situational Safety Precautions
Things like don't hold an open house alone seem obvious but agents need to take them seriously. Others include not showing a home at night. Safety precautions include being vigilant at all times when out in the field. This is good practice even if agents aren't feeling nervous about a situation. It's always a great idea to have pepper spray or something similar on hand, not just when working as a real estate agent. Self defense classes and YouTube videos are also available to all.
When it comes to showings, it's best to drive yourself or drive the clients. This keeps the agent in control of the situation if anything were to go awry. Last but not least, always ensure that someone knows where you were going and the general time frame.
Also, it's not always safety from other people that is worth being aware of. Think about weather and the environment as well. Don't show homes or be out and about during inclement weather and wearing close-toed shoes are other important tactics. No one wants to step on a nail or be caught in a rain storm.
Staying Safe on Social Media
We talk a lot about how important social media is for your business - and it is. But, there's a limit. There's no need to be too public about an agent's personal life on social media. Things like details on where you live, where your kids go to school, etc. - those should all remain private.
If someone sends you a direct message (DM) that seems off, block them from your profile. While agents real estate profiles should remain public, it doesn't mean their personal accounts need to be.
Odds Are - Everything Will Be Fine
None of this is being said to frighten prospective or current agents. In the majority of all situations, it'll all be absolutely fine. But, better safe than sorry. Also, these are not just safety tips but good tips professionally.
