Being a real estate agent can seem like a 24/7 job. Sometimes, that's true. But, there's no reason agents shouldn't be able to enjoy the holidays themselves and take a break from the daily grind.
On the other side of that coin, it may be hard to enjoy the holidays if business is slow and cash flow is tight. However with some preparation and intentional planning - agents can enjoy the holiday season!
Plan For Business to Be Slow
It's best to plan for business to slow down. This way, if things stay buys it's a bonus! When planning for business to slow down during the holidays keep three things in mind:
- Budget for the months of Nov-January ahead of time
- Up your marketing during the holiday season
- Network as much as possible
Budgeting for the holidays is paramount in taking away stress if business slows down. If all year you've put a little bit of money aside for the holidays, then come gift-giving time - you won't be nearly as stressed! Keep in mind how many people you usually give gifts too, if you host or contribute to any holiday parties, and anything you'd like to donate too. Then set a reasonable amount aside each month and take the stress of yourself.
An agent's marketing should go up during the holiday season, or stay consistent, even if business is slow. This way you stay top of mind and can earn more referrals. Consider starting a newsletter or scheduling out your social media posts so you can enjoy the holidays with your loved ones!
Network, network, network. All of the holiday parties you'll go to? The multiple different local events in your community? You need to show up! Don't be obnoxious or only talk about work, but be sure to mention what you do for a living. This is a great time to wear a subtle hat that has your business logo on it, etc.
Set Boundaries on When You'll Work and Play
Set boundaries on when you'll work and when you'll play. Work/life balance is always important. But more than ever during the holiday season. This is because life already gets busier and lines get blurred. Soon enough, you haven't had dinner at home in five nights and don't know what's going on in your family's lives. Small talk is a casualty of holiday events so be intentional about when you will reset.
This is a good time to establish an end to your work day and maybe taking one day off a week - heck maybe even two.
At the end of the day, the holidays are meant to be spent feeling joy and relaxing. Agents need not miss out on this because they are being loyal to their clients. You can do both! You just need to stay organized and plan accordingly.
