Having integrity is everything as an agent. Clients, other professionals, and your potential team and fellow agents, all need to know that they can trust your word. Having a strong moral compass will serve agents well in the real estate industry.
Taking the High Road
Maybe you've seen one the several reality tv shows focusing on real estate lately. These "docu-series" or shows are great examples of why having integrity is of utmost importance. While the agents who don't uphold their moral standards when it comes to business are maybe entertaining; it almost always goes sour for them. In the end, no one can trust them, and where does that really leave a real estate agent?
If someone else has shady tactics, it's best not to work with them. They could mess up a deal for you and hurt your relationship with your client. If another professional, or even a client, is doing something that seems unethical or just "not right," it's best to address it head on and put a stop to the situation. Taking the high road is always the best policy, especially in any sales driven industry.
In an industry so built upon networking, word of mouth, and reputation - lacking integrity just isn't worth it.
Why Playing Dirty Isn't Worth It
Quite simply: it just isn't worth the risk. An agent's license, reputation, and business are really all on the line if they get labeled as someone who doesn't have integrity. Sometimes this means that agents may need to ensure that there is clear communication with their clients. Sometimes high maintenance clients may feel that something is happening; whether that's not meeting expectations or being taken advantage of, and agents need to quickly rectify that situation.
Especially in the days of social media and yelp reviews galore, there's too much exposure to not be labeled as someone with upstanding character and work ethic. So, be sure to always take the high road, maintain honest communication in all transactions, and let your reputation speak for you.
