Success means different things to different people -- the definition will most certainly vary from individual to individual. However, most can agree that when referencing success in a professional way; we're talking financially and specifically the ability to pay bills, go on the occasional vacation and live a life in comfort -- maybe not opulence, but comfort. For real estate agents success is also defined by an agent’s ability to connect with their clients and expand their client base. The four habits below can help establish a solid groundwork for agents.
The habits listed have the above criteria in mind and they offer a good place to start or a great refresher for agents doing some reflection on how they're doing professionally. While four habits only skims the surface of qualities and habits that successful people, and successful agents, possess -- four is an accessible number no matter where you are in your career. Implementing four habits is doable and improving on four habits is almost easy, which is key because no habit or intention will stick if it isn't realistic.
The first habit is:
1. Possess the Proper Mindset
Mind over matter really is a universal truth. In real estate, it's vital to maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook and a level head that sees multiple perspectives at all times. Most importantly -- agents need to be able to quickly think outside the box about efficient solutions for all parties involved. The ability to communicate effectively and promptly with multiple different groups pays off big time when it comes to real estate transactions -- but if an agent is communicating in a way that doesn't convey a mindset that has it all under control -- they're going to be much less impactful. A real estate agent has to believe in their buyers, sellers, and property and their own ability to sell.
2. Emphasize a Listing’s Features
When listing a property, agents ought to keep in mind that a buyer is looking for features that will keep their family safe and home running smoothly.
These features consist of:
- Upgraded appliances
- Detailed finishes
- High-definition security system
- Latest smart gadgets
Being sure to emphasize these features in the listing description and when showing and listing the property is a bulletproof way to gain more traction. When scrolling through various internet listings of homes, buyers need to be able to quickly see the perks of a home on the market. Highlighting key features right away, and then again at the end of the listing, is a habit that is easy to implement and does nothing but help agents.
3. Act Swiftly and Promptly; Schedule Accordingly
While rushing sellers or buyers is definitely something to avoid -- an agent never wants to be the reason a deal isn't going through or there's a hold-up of some sort. Let sellers, buyers, escrow companies, etc. be the hold-up, but as an agent it's key to be on the pulse of what's going on in the market and with your clients. This is true in every aspect of real estate and applies to scheduling showings, meetings, etc. In real estate, potential buyers can tell whether agents are motivated and excited about showing them a property, versus merely going through the motions to close a deal.
The majority of the time, when a buyer calls looking to purchase a home or a seller sets up an appointment to list their home -- they want to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. The same week is often preferable and expected as both buyers and sellers tend to get into a frenzy about time equating to wasted money or a sudden drop in inventory. Buying and selling a home is one of the more stressful events most people go through and therefore they need prompt communication and action from the professional they've hired to guide them through this time.
4. Have a Strong Digital Presence
Successful agents are changing with the times and have quickly adapted to the digital age. The use of social media like Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, and Twitter to advertise business is invaluable as the majority of individuals now use the internet to quickly make decisions -- whether that's where to eat that night or what real estate agent to list their house with.
Digital platforms are making it easier than ever for both agents and clients to utilize their sites to connect in the digital real estate world. Homes can be toured on Facebook these days (just like a digital tour on Zillow or Redfin), property photos can be featured on an agent's instagram and shared via "stories," and other nuggets of market knowledge and insight can be shared with followers on all social channels. With more success, agents can also choose to pay for advertising on sites like Instagram and Facebook and be the first option a client sees. Ultimately, a strong digital presence will lead to more clients and closings.
While there is a myriad of habits to possess and hone and multiple different ways to be successful -- starting with these four would provide a good foundation for any agent.
